Emmy-winning reporter Andrea Kremer teaches new course

Getting the story often means getting answers to tough questions. Starting in Spring 2013, journalism students will learn some of the finer points of getting those answers in a new class dedicated to interviewing taught by Emmy-winning reporter Andrea Kremer.

The Department of Journalism in the Boston University College of Communication (COM) announced that Kremer, chief correspondent for player health and safety issues for the NFL Network and also a correspondent for HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” will be teaching at COM during the spring 2013 semester. Her class will focus on interviewing and is believed to be one of only a few in the country devoted solely to teaching students the fundamentals of this vital part of the reporting process.

According to William McKeen, chair of the Department of Journalism, the addition of Kremer to the faculty is highly anticipated. “Andrea will be teaching a course of her creation on the art of interviewing and our students will have the opportunity to take a master class with one of the great interviewers working today. Few programs have a whole course focused on this basic part of journalism,” said McKeen.

Kremer also assisted BU journalism students during a summer 2012 course that focused on covering the London Olympics teaching a seminar on interview technique prior to their departure for London. “Covering the London Olympics gave journalism majors the opportunity to expand local coverage of the Games by posting articles, video and audio reports to websites of several major New England news outlets,” said Susan Walker, associate professor of journalism. “Our students interviewed Andrea in the Olympic Park during one of her round-the clock days as NBC's swimming correspondent.”

"I have been in the business of journalism - print, radio and television - for over three decades and have conducted thousands of interviews of every imaginable genre. I have also had the opportunity to study interviewing under some of the best experts in the country,” said Kremer. “I have always felt it is critically important to share my experience and knowledge with young people, especially those breaking in to the workforce. This is not a sports oriented class and you don't even have to aspire to a career in journalism because I believe that the skills required to be a good interviewer are universally applicable.”

About Andrea Kremer

Andrea Kremer joined the NFL Network in October 2012 to serve as the chief correspondent for a newly-created unit dedicated to player health and safety. Kremer has extensive experience covering the Olympics. Most recently, she covered swimming at the 2012 Olympics in London on behalf of NBC Sports. Prior to this, she covered speed skating in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and swimming in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Kremer was well known for her coverage of Michael Phelps in 2008 during his pursuit of a record-breaking eight gold medals. Kremer spent five seasons as the sideline and feature reporter for NBC’s "Sunday Night Football." Prior to that, she was the national correspondent for ESPN for 17 years. The Los Angeles Times has called her “the best TV interviewer in the business of covering the NFL" and she is a two-time Emmy award winner.
