NBC’s Andrea Kremer teaches Olympic lessons

"You do not LOSE gold, you WIN silver" may seem like a minor distinction to a layperson, but Olympics correspondent Andrea Kremer reminded Boston University students that no detail is too small in good sports reporting.

Other points Kremer stressed during her April 25 visit to the College of Communication:

  • Ask the hard-working question.
  • Every interview must have a goal.
  • You cannot do enough preparation.
  • Do not speculate on injuries.

The veteran network reporter also showed students what it's like to interview athletes live, post-game and post-race, and how to never forget the "storytelling of the moment." She showed several clips of her work, including interviews with swimmer Michael Phelps winning gold during relay and individual events at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

Kremer is a reporter with NBC Sports and HBO's "Real Sports." She will be reporting again on swimmers at the 2012 Summer Olympics Games in London. She told BU students planning to cover local athletes at the Games to "make it fresh, that's your job." Fourteen BU students will travel to London to cover the Games this summer as part of a program sponsored by COM's Journalism Department and the BU Study Abroad office.
