PURPOSE
The mission of the Boston University School of Medicine Continuing
Medical Education Office is to sponsor high quality educational
experiences that purvey the expertise of our faculty, encouraging
physicians to continuously improve their professional competency
in the provision of patient care. We seek to sponsor evidence
based programming that is pertinent to the needs of practicing
physicians, is based on sound principles of adult learning,
and results in positive changes in healthcare practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience of our continuing medical education activities
primarily includes physicians practicing in the United States.
We also reach out to international physicians as well as residents,
fellows and allied health professionals practicing as part
of the health care team both nationally and internationally.
CONTENT AREAS
Our programs cover a wide variety of medical topics representing
most every discipline at Boston University School of Medicine.
We sponsor activities with faculty from Anesthesiology, Cardiology,
Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Family Medicine,
Gastroenterology, Genetics, Infectious Diseases, Internal
Medicine, Microbiology, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology,
Oncology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics including General, Behavioral
and Infectious Diseases, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Radiology,
Surgery, Urology and Women's Health. We also sponsor programs
with faculty from the Boston University School of Public Health.
Communication skills, bioterrorism, ethics, multicultural
issues, patient safety and risk management are examples of
specific topics that are featured or integrated into a variety
of our educational activities. Content areas are based on
best evidence and continually change according to on-going
needs assessment, emerging technologies, and local, as well
as global, healthcare concerns.
ACTIVITIES
Our continuing medical education programs include national,
regional and local conferences; teleconferences; grand rounds
and tutorials based at Boston Medical Center, our affiliated
hospital, and other local affiliated institutions; enduring
materials including monographs, CD Roms and Internet-based
activities; and journal-based CME. We work in conjunction
with other educational organizations to jointly sponsor activities
with the guidance, participation and approval of our faculty.
The Continuing Medical Education Office supports these activities
through our expertise in program development, needs assessment,
educational design, adult learning practices, question writing,
conference management, and promotion.
RESULTS
Boston University School of Medicine Continuing Medical Education
sponsors high quality, balanced, educational activities that
instruct participants in current medical concepts that drive
them to make relevant changes in their clinical practices.
We strive to measure outcomes to ensure that a continuous
link exists between our needs assessment and the improvements
physicians make in their practices which in turn promotes
better patient outcomes.
