January - BUWIC begins outreach program at English Highschool

Boston University's BUWIC and Chemia, in conjunction Christina Creccawith LERNet, is initiating a Chemistry Outreach Program at English High School. English High School is a local school in theSusan DeSensi STEP UP Partnership and BU is the lead institution charged with helping to improve student performance at English. Outreach will involve volunteers bringing in demos and assisting students with their work in class. Teams will be supervised by two PFFs from chemistry, Susan DeSensi (pictured left) and Christina Crecca (pictured right), who will meet periodically with the teachers and suggest activities for class.

Hilary Domush of the Chemical Heritage Foundation will visit BU for a seminar forChemical Heritage Foundation Museum BUWIC members.

The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) serves the community of the chemical and molecular sciences, and the wider public, by treasuring the past, educating the present, and inspiring the future. CHF maintains a world-class collection of materials that document the history and heritage of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and industries; encourages research in CHF collections; and carries out a program of outreach and interpretation in order to advance an understanding of the role of the chemical and molecular sciences, technologies, and industries in shaping society. Amy Wright of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution will share lunch discussion and seminar for BUWIC members. "Amy Wright is a natural products chemist and head of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's Division of Biomedical Marine Research (DBMR). The group's focus is on finding potential new therapeutics for cancer and infectious diseases, mainly from deepwater marine invertebrates and the microbes that live in association with them." - marinebiotech.org
