Week Six: Boston-London Program

The London semester for the Boston-London Program has finally come to an end. During their last week in London, students focused on studying for finals, completing their last assignments, and saying goodbye to the places they’ve explored for the last six weeks.

For their last readings and class discussions, students studied globalization and discussed ISIS.  They read a New York Times reflection on the relationship between technology and memory, examined read David Foster Wallace’s thoughts on “Television and US Fiction,” and discussed “ethnographic imagery” in the HBO show The Wire.

For one of their final projects, students chose a London Tube stop and created a five-minute video that showed the sights and what there is to do around the Tube stop. With a focus on free or inexpensive activities, these videos are designed to be a helpful guide for next year’s students. In 2015, students created videos on Abbey Road, the London financial district, Kensington Gardens, and other London attractions.  One video from this year focuses on the London Bridge stop where students can visit a cathedral that was founded in 606 AD, see a play at Shakespeare’s Globe theater (a student favorite), and take a cruise down the Thames.

For another class project, students visited the Museum of London to find an exhibit on London’s past and then traveled to the neighborhood in person to compare the neighborhood as it is today with the era in the exhibit. They also wrote reflective essays thinking about their academic accomplishments and the skills they’ve gained in the last year.

Now students embark on a well-earned summer vacation before returning to CGS in the fall as sophomores in the Boston University Class of 2019. Congratulations to the January Boston-London program students on finishing up the semester, and a special thanks to our student photographers who documented their travels.
