Flagship Report: Medicines in Universal Health Coverage

Project Description

The Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (AHPSR) regularly publishes a Flagship Report on a priority health policy and system research (HPSR) topic. The next report, due in October 2014, will focus on medicines as an important building block of the health system and a neglected area of HPSR. Researchers at CGHD will contribute to the 2014 Flagship Report by writing a chapter analyzing pharmaceutical policies in universal health coverage (UHC) schemes through a “case-study” approach. Five countries with UHC — Mexico, China, Georgia, Ghana, and Indonesia – will be explored through selective document review and key informant interviews. Specific objectives of this project include:

  1. Present a detailed view of medicines coverage and pharmaceutical management strategies adopted in three to five select Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs) across different regions;
  2. Explore existing information sources on medicines in these countries’ health systems and health financing schemes;
  3. Illustrate how these information sources can be used to examine intended and unintended consequences of medicine coverage policies and pharmaceutical management strategies.
