Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT)

Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is the leading cause of HIV infection in children under age 15 in Zambia. In the absence of interventions to prevent transmission, the risk of a child acquiring the virus from the mother is as high as 40%. The CGHD is working to strengthen existing prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services and fully integrate PMTCT programming into maternal, newborn, and child health services in each district of Zambia’s Southern Province.
