NY Times References CGHD Research in Breast Milk and HIV Transmission
The NY Times references a paper based on CGHD’s Zambia Exclusive Breastfeeding Study (ZEBS). In the paper, researchers explored the effects of a certain substance in breast milk – human milk oligosaccharides — on transmission of HIV through breastfeeding.
The study, published online Aug. 15 in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that women whose breast milk held concentrations of human milk oligosaccharides above the median were less than half as likely to have transmitted the infection to their babies as those with concentrations below the median.
