Undergraduate Portfolio Requirements
Applicants to the undergraduate program in the School of Visual Arts at Boston University may either upload their portfolio online, or attend an on-campus portfolio review day. Portfolios are to consist of at least fifteen (15) and not more than twenty (20) samples of work. The portfolio review committee is especially interested in seeing examples of the applicant’s ability to work from observation.
There are three required samples of work:
- At least one portrait drawing (a self-portrait or portrait from life)
- At least one still-life drawing (from actual objects)
- At least one composition of recognizable objects (a drawing or painting)
Portfolios consisting primarily of photography are not acceptable.
The Early Decision portfolio submission deadline is November 15, 2014.
The Regular Decision portfolio submission deadline is January 30, 2015.

On-Campus Portfolio Events
The Boston University School of Visual Arts offers on-campus Portfolio Feedback Sessions in the fall and final Portfolio Reviews in January. Portfolio Feedback Sessions give students the chance to meet with a faculty member in order to fine-tune their portfolio before applying. Final Portfolio Reviews are for applicants who choose to present their final admissions portfolio on campus in addition to submitting it online. Both events give students the opportunity to meet with faculty members and staff and to take student-led tours.

School of Visual Arts Fall Shadow Day
Monday, September 29
9am-2pm or 12pm-5pm
The School of Visual Arts Shadow Day invites prospective students to participate in classes and experience a typical day at the BU School of Visual Arts. Students can attend classes offered between 9-12 or 2-5. We will provide lunch, an information session with Visual Arts staff, student led tours and portfolio feedback reviews between 12-2.
When registering, please indicate if you would like to attend Graphic Design or Drawing in the morning session, or Sculpture or Drawing in the afternoon session.
Portfolio Feedback Session
Friday, October 10
The Portfolio Feedback Session includes a portfolio feedback review with a faculty member, an informal information session with Visual Arts staff, and a student-led tour.

College of Fine Arts Visitors Day

The College of Fine Arts Visitors Day includes sessions on admissions and financial aid and lunch with current School of Visual Arts students in addition to portfolio feedback reviews and student-led tours. For more information, or to register, please go to the Visitors Day website.
