Application Materials

Applicants are required to submit the following:

  • Completed application for Graduate Admission to the College of Fine Arts
  • Non-refundable application fee of $70
  • Official transcripts from all Colleges and Universities attended
  • Résumé
  • Headshot
  • Letter of Intent (please see description below)
  • Two (2) Production Essays (please see description below)
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation from theatre professionals. These may be submitted online using the supplied Letter of Recommendation form, or recommenders may submit official, signed letters directly to the School of Theatre in a sealed envelope.

Letter of Intent

The letter of intent should describe the applicant's career path and ambitions and why the applicant wishes to study directing at Boston University at this time.

Production Essays

  • Applicants are asked to choose a play they have directed and write a passionate essay including an analysis of the script, conceptual and design ideas, and an explanation of the applicant's personal connection to the work.
  • Applicants are asked to choose and justify a three-play season for a theatre and audience of their own imagining.

Application materials deadline: February 15
Early application is advised.


In late March, after review of all materials, a small number of applicants will be invited to interview in Boston. Successful applicants have been early-career professionals with an established body of directing work. The faculty takes time to review each candidate with care; therefore, applicants should not expect decisions until late spring.

In addition, be sure to review specific application requirements for the School and program to which you are applying. Please do not send additional supporting material as it will not be evaluated or returned.

 

Financial Aid

The School of Theatre expects to substantially fund most accepted graduate students. Most students receive up to a full tuition scholarship, assistantship, and stipend. For more information, please explore our Tuition and Financial Aid web page.
