Student Life

The Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is a residential program that provides students the opportunity to develop artistically, academically, and socially, both in their respective program studies and as a part of their peer community through Student Life. All of our faculty and staff are committed to supporting each BUTI student in their personal and professional pursuits, no matter where they are in their development. We believe that a balance of intensive study and meaningful residential life contributes to the overall development of the individual and creates an extraordinary community of young artists of all backgrounds and life trajectories.

At BUTI students acquire invaluable life skills as they interact as roommates and peers, living and eating alongside one another, and as colleagues, practicing, studying, and performing together.

Residential Life

Residence facilities are located on the beautiful, 64-acre West Street Campus, located within walking distance of Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts. Sprawling lawns and woodlands are the backdrop to life at BUTI.

Students are housed in single-sex, dormitory-style residence halls. There are common bathroom facilities located on each floor, and students typically share a room with one or two other students. Room and roommate assignments are determined by each student’s program of study, age, living style, and interests.

Students are required to observe quiet hours, a curfew and other policies designed to keep the campus safe and conducive to academic study. With resident life staff on every residence hall floor, overnight security patrols and 24-hour health services, the safety of our student population is ensured.

In addition to their academic study, students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular events. Movie nights, dodgeball tournaments, trivia, shopping excursions, yoga, hiking, and swimming are just a few of the activities available to students.

Dining at BUTI

Breakfast/brunch, lunch and dinner is included in the tuition and fees. Meals take into account nutrition and appetite and are designed to appeal to the majority of students. Most special dietary needs (i.e. vegetarian/vegan, gluten-free, food allergies) can be accommodated without issue. There are no cooking facilities available for student use.

Health Services

The BUTI Health Services Office employs registered nurses, including an Adolescent Behavioral Specialist. Through regular office hours and an on-call Nurse-in-Residence, BUTI provides 24/7 medical coverage that includes the treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, dispensing of prescription and non-prescription medication and caring for student emotional well-being. The nurses may also be consulted on routine medical problems without charge to the student. More serious appointments are referred to local medical facilities.

Transportation Services

All necessary transportation to off-campus BUTI events is available at no cost. This includes Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center concerts, academic activities, and extracurricular events.
