We believe that a balance of intensive study and meaningful residential life contributes to the overall development of the individual. Most students share a room in a dormitory-style residence, participate in a variety of campus events, and eat in the BUTI cafeteria (which always offers vegetarian, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly options). With RAs on every floor, overnight security, and 24/7 medical staff, we’re there to support your musical and personal growth every step of the way. Our campus is located two hours west of Boston in Lenox, Massachusetts. This tiny town comes alive as a major cultural hub each summer. Go to Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival or Shakespeare and Co. Take a yoga class or try Feldenkrais Method. Hike Mount Greylock and then go for a swim at the BSO Beach. Dance the night away at the BUTI prom. Conquer the ice cream challenge at The Scoop, or kick back and enjoy a bluegrass concert in Lilac Park.
Safety and Health
The safety and health of our student body is our number one priority. BUTI adheres to Boston University Protection of Minors Policy which includes background checks and special training for all faculty and staff.
Students are required to observe quiet hours, a curfew, and other policies designed to keep the campus safe and conducive to academic study. BUTI houses resident assistants on every residence hall floor and utilizes overnight security patrols.
BUTI Health Services employs registered nurses, including an Adolescent Behavioral Specialist. Additionally, a mental health consultant (LMHC) is available to advise and speak with students as needed. Through regular office hours and an on-call nurse-in-residence, BUTI provides daily medical care for the treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, consultation on routine health issues, dispensing of prescription and non-prescription medication, and caring for student emotional well-being. BUTI can also arrange specialized care for students experiencing a performance-related injury, or in the early stages of a potential injury, with Regina Campbell, Physical Therapist. Regina specializes in work with musicians, and her clients include members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
For more serious, non-emergency concerns, students are referred to local physicians. If a student is referred to a medical facility off campus, BUTI will share your medical and insurance information with the medical facility for treatment and billing purposes.
Residence facilities are located on the beautiful, 64-acre West Street Campus, located within walking distance of Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts. Students are housed in single-sex, dormitory-style residence halls. There are common bathroom facilities located on each floor, and students typically share a room with one or two other students. Room and roommate assignments are determined by each student’s program of study, age, living style, and interests. In addition to their academic study, students have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular events. Movie nights, trivia, shopping excursions, and hiking are just a few activities made available to students.
Dining at BUTI
Breakfast or brunch, lunch, and dinner are included in the tuition and fees (20 meals per week). Options take into account nutrition and appetite, are designed to appeal to the majority of students, and vary day to day. Service at lunch and dinner provides two main-course entrees and one vegan entree, as well as a salad bar and deli. Breakfast includes cereal and bread options, fruits, and hot foods such as eggs, pancakes, and oatmeal. The dining hall can accommodate special dietary needs, including allergies, and is a nut-free facility. There are no cooking facilities available for student use.
Health & Wellness Series
The Health & Wellness Series provides students with tools to develop and practice healthy habits that benefit the body and mind. Regular sessions offered include Yoga, Body Mapping, and Feldenkrais Method. Additional resources include referrals to physical therapists and body awareness experts, and additional presentations on injury prevention, the mind-body connection, and overcoming performance anxiety. The 2017 Health & Wellness Series is sponsored by Alan and Lois Whitney.
All necessary transportation to off-campus BUTI events is available at no cost. This includes Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Center concerts, academic activities, and extracurricular events.
