Oboe Workshop
June 16 – June 29, 2013
Ages 14-20
John Ferrillo, BSO Principal oboe, and Robert Sheena, BSO English horn/oboe, offers oboists the opportunity to learn from the best! Both Mr. Ferrillo and Mr. Sheena provide instruction in many areas critical to good oboe and English horn playing. These will include, but are not limited to, the important fundamentals of “long-tones”, slow scales, Barret and Ferling etudes, and orchestral and recital repertoire. Daily classes, lessons, and master classes will be devoted to practice techniques, breath and embouchure control, audition preparation, and instrument maintenance. Specifically, Mr. Sheena will devote some class time to the English horn as well as the oboe.
Classes will also cover many aspects of reed-making: knife-sharpening, gouging, tieing, and scraping. Students are expected to bring the appropriate equipment and supplies for reed-making sessions.
Repertoire studied will include:
- Mozart – Oboe Concerto
- Marcello – Oboe Concerto
- Handel, Telemann or Bach – any Concerto or Sonata
- Telemann – Fantasies for Solo Flute (Oboe)
- Barret Etudes– Oboe Method (concentrating on the 40 melodies)
- Ferling Etudes – 48 Etudes (concentrating on the first 10)
- Standard Orchestra Excerpts
There will be opportunities for students to work on not only solo works but also small ensembles that include oboe and English horn. Students receive individual lessons with the directors as well as assigned time with an accompanist in preparation for a solo and ensemble oboe workshop recital at the conclusion of the program.
