Boston Choral Ensemble (BCE) will explore the ways that various composers have been inspired by deploration, or lament, to write powerfully moving music. The concert will begin with the famous Deploration on the death of Ockeghem by Josquin and continue with a contrast of Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah for men’s voices with Tartini’s setting of the Stabat Mater for women’s voices. BCE will then highlight different approaches to text interpretation, contrasting a setting of When David heard from the renaissance with that of 21st century composer Eric Whitacre. The highlight of the concert will be a performance of the monumental 40-part motet Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis, a well-known, but rarely performed renaissance masterpiece. Performances are at 8pm on March 8 at St. Paul's Church in Cambridge and March 9 at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. Admission is free with BU ID.
