BM in Composition and Theory

Composition students study with composers who are significant figures in the contemporary music scene. Performance opportunities with ensembles large ensembles are combined with comprehensive training in theory, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, and contemporary techniques. Resident ensemble Alea III, conducted by Theodore Antoniou, provides regular opportunities to experience new music. At the Composers Forum students interact with visiting composers. The electronic and computer music facility is alive with energy and innovation. Recent graduates are teaching in music schools and universities throughout the world. They are recipients of Guggenheim Fellowships, Prix de Rome, and Fulbright Grants, as well as ASCAP and NACUSA prizes.

Composition Score Submission Requirement

Applicants must submit an application for admission to Boston University.  Additionally, applicants must submit three composition scores to the Music Admissions Office, College of Fine Arts, 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215 along with a printed Composition Score Submission Form. Work submitted for application evaluation should be in good manuscript form and should demonstrate talent, some knowledge of contemporary music, and technical skill.  Students applying to enter the major at the sophomore level must present to the department evidence of their work at a level equal to that of CFA MU 561, 562 Basic Compositional Techniques. Composition majors are required to enroll in the honors-level theory sequence.

Audition Requirement

Applicants to the major in Composition & Theory must audition on an instrument offered at Boston University and according to the requirements of the Bachelor of Music in Performance.
