Historical Performance

Degrees offered

Martin Pearlman, School of Music Artist-in-Residence, is the founding Music Director of Boston Baroque, America’s leading period-instrument orchestra and chorus, now serving as resident professional ensemble of the School’s Historical Performance Program.

The Department of Historical Performance program of study includes:

Applied Music
Instrumental and vocal study with department faculty drawn from Boston Baroque, and members of the BU voice and opera departments.

Baroque Ensembles
Baroque Chamber Orchestra: Students will have the opportunity to learn Baroque orchestral repertory, technique, and style, and absorb the Orchestra’s professional culture by rehearsing and performing side-by-side with BCO members as they are directed by Martin Pearlman.
Baroque chamber ensembles: coached by members of Boston Baroque.

Course Work
Performance Practice Seminar taught by Martin Pearlman, Continuo Class taught by Peter Sykes, for all graduate majors, Music Research Techniques, Musicology, Theory, and electives.
