MusM with a Major in Composition
Applicants must submit the following:
- Completed application for graduate admission to the College of Fine Arts.
- Non-refundable application fee of $70.
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
- Artistic résumé.
- Personal statement indicating the applicant’s purpose in pursuing graduate work, including career objectives.
- At least three original compositions in good manuscript form,
reflecting a variety of instrumental and formal types, including
at least one work for a larger group such as a chamber orchestra
and/or chorus. Tapes of compositions are helpful, but not required.
- At least one example of tonal composition such as a fugue,
short sonata movement, or other academic composition.
- Two (2) Letters of recommendation from music professionals/educators. These may be submitted online using supplied Letter of Recommendation Form, or an offical letter from the recommeder in a sealed envelope.
All works should be sent to the School of Music with the graduate
application. Applicants must submit an SASE if they want their
scores returned.
A performance audition is not required for admission to graduate
programs in composition unless a student wishes to qualify in
order to study performance for graduate credit. However, the
student must satisfy a basic keyboard proficiency requirement
to receive the MusM degree in composition.
