MusM with a Major in Composition

Applicants must meet the general prerequisite requirements for the MusM program. In addition, each applicant in composition is required to submit:

  • At least three original compositions in good manuscript form, reflecting a variety of instrumental and formal types, including at least one work for a larger group such as a chamber orchestra and/or chorus. Tapes of compositions are helpful, but not required.
  • At least one example of tonal composition such as a fugue, short sonata movement, or other academic composition
  • Two letters of recommendation.

All works should be sent to the School of Music with the graduate application. Applicants must submit an SASE if they want their scores returned.

A performance audition is not required for admission to graduate programs in composition unless a student wishes to qualify in order to study performance for graduate credit. However, the student must satisfy a basic keyboard proficiency requirement to receive the MusM degree in composition.
