MusAD Majors Application Requirements

Doctor of Musical Arts degree program in Performance and Historical Performance

  • Completed application for graduate admission to the College of Fine Arts.
  • Non-refundable application fee of $70.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Personal statement indicating the applicant’s purpose in pursuing graduate work, including career objectives.
  • An audition. Applicants must audition in person unless their place of residence is over 300 miles from Boston. (appointment schedule)
  • Three (3) Letters of recommendation from music professionals/educators. These may be submitted online using supplied Letter of Recommendation Form, or an offical letter from the recommender in a sealed envelope.
  • A complete repertory listing.
  • Senior Recital Program (for voice applicants only)

Self-prepared recordings are accepted but must be received by January 15. It is also possible that faculty of the School may be able to hear auditions in other cities. Please contact the School of Music for additional audition information.

  • An audition. Applicants must audition in person unless their place of residence is over 300 miles from Boston. (appointment schedule)
  • Three (3) Letters of recommendation from music professionals/educators. These may be submitted online using supplied Letter of Recommendation Form, or an offical letter from the recommender in a sealed envelope.
  • Sample scores, of which one must be a tonal composition or fugue. Please indicate your name and proposed degree program on the scores.

Doctor of Musical Arts degree program in Music Education

  • Completed application for graduate admission to the College of Fine Arts.
  • Non-refundable application fee of $70.

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Personal statement indicating the applicant’s purpose in pursuing graduate work, including career objectives.
  • An example of scholarly writing such as a published article or research paper used for Master's work.
  • Three (3) current letters of reference from music education scholars/leaders addressing your leadership abilities in music education and potential for success in doctoral studies.
  • GRE or MAT score. GRE code: 3082. MAT code: 2592
  • No audition is required for the MusAD in Music Education.

Choral Conducting

  • Completed application for graduate admission to the College of Fine Arts.

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • Preliminary audition video (please see requirements below)
  • Personal statement indicating the applicant’s purpose in pursuing graduate work, including career objectives.
  • Three (3) Letters of recommendation from music professionals/educators. These may be submitted online using supplied Letter of Recommendation Form, or an offical letter from the recommender in a sealed envelope.

This preliminary video should include 20–30 minutes of the candidate in rehearsal and/or performance with a choral ensemble.

Selected applicants will be invited to audition in person. The repertoire will be chosen from the following works:

  • Bach, Cantata No. 131, “Aus der Tiefe rufe ich,” final chorus (“Israel hoffe auf den Hern”)
  • Mozart, “Lacrymosa” from Requiem
  • Britten, Rejoice in the Lamb, pp. 1–10 (through the “Nimrod” chorus)
  • Victoria, Ave Maria

Each candidate will also be asked to sing an art song and play a solo keyboard composition at the level of a Bach two-part invention.

Orchestral Conducting

  • Completed application for graduate admission to the College of Fine Arts.

  • Preliminary audition video (please see requirements below)
  • Personal statement indicating the applicant’s purpose in pursuing graduate work, including career objectives.
  • Three (3) Letters of recommendation from music professionals/educators. These may be submitted online using supplied Letter of Recommendation Form, or an offical letter from the recommender in a sealed envelope.

The preliminary audition video should include 20–30 minutes of the candidate in rehearsal and/or performance with an orchestral ensemble.

Selected applicants will be invited to audition in person. The repertoire will be chosen from the following works:

  • Beethoven, Symphonies 1 and 2
  • Mozart Overture to Die Zauberflöte
  • Stravinsky, L’histoire du Soldat: “Royal March” and “Petit Concert”

The live audition will also include an individual interview that will examine skills in conducting, sight-singing (in all clefs), keyboard, dictation, musical terminology, score-reading, orchestration, and analysis. Each candidate will also be asked to perform on his or her principal instrument. Candidates will conduct an ensemble as the final part of the audition.
