Music Minor: Curricular Guidelines

The music minor in performance requires successful completion of 24 credit hours of courses in music according to the following distribution:

Academic coursework:
  Music Theory 4 credits
  Music History 6 credits

Music performance:
  Private Instruction 4 credits
  Ensemble participation 6 credits

Approved music electives:
  Taken from either of the above categories 4 credits
     
  TOTAL: 24 credits

  offerings vary by semester
   
Private Instruction
 
  • All private lessons for music minors may be taken for either .5 or 1.0 credit per semester.
  • Private lessons are taught by School of Music graduate students recommended by their departments, adjunct instructors, and full-time School of Music faculty members.
  • Odd-numbered courses = one-hour lessons per week
  • Even-numbered courses = half-hour lessons per week

  Any student wishing to audition for the School of Music MU 650 Symphony, Chamber Orchestras, or Wind Ensemble must complete 2 credits of lessons and 2 credits of BUMO large ensembles prior to petitioning for an audition. Petitions will be handled through the Director of BUMO programs.
