Audition Policies

Boston University College of Fine Arts | School of Music

The School of Music makes every attempt to confirm each applicant for their first choice of audition dates and times. However, it may not be possible due to the large number of audition requests that we receive.

Application to Boston University

Audition requests cannot be confirmed until an application to the School of Music is on file with Boston University. For undergraduate applicants, this is their application to Boston University Undergraduate Admissions. For graduate applicants, this is their application to Graduate Admissions at the College of Fine Arts, School of Music.

Application Deadlines:
January 1 for Undergraduate Applicants
January 15 for Graduate and Post-Graduate Applicants

Rescheduling Policy

We do understand that applicants are trying to juggle audition schedules with other music schools. While Boston University School of Music wishes to be accommodating, it is not always possible to change confirmed audition dates because of the large number of applicants. Our appointment system will allow self-rescheduling up to 21 days prior to your audition, provided there are remaining appointment times available. After this time, all requests for a change of audition must be made in writing to Boston University School of Music. We cannot guarantee that a change of schedule date will be possible.

Appointment Cancellation Policy

Once an audition date has been confirmed, applicants are expected to keep the scheduled appointment. Our audition appointment system will allow for self-cancellation up to 21 days prior to your scheduled audition date. After this time, we request that applicants who wish to cancel notify the School of Music Admissions Office so that we may give this time to another applicant.

Accompanist Policy

For Boston auditions, piano accompanists are required and can be provided for applicants in voice, violin, viola, and cello; however, applicants are welcome to use their own accompanist.

Applicants auditioning in voice, violin, viola or cello at a regional audition location must provide their own accompanist.

String applicants wishing to use a Boston University staff accompanist for the Boston auditions must send clean, legible copies of their audition repertoire to the School of Music to be received no later than two weeks prior to their scheduled audition date.

Voice applicants do NOT need to send music ahead of time. Applicants should instead bring the piano music with them on the day of the audition.

Audition No-Show Policy

Applicants who do not notify the School of Music Admissions Office that they cannot attend their scheduled audition will not be rescheduled. They may only audition by submitting a self-prepared recording.

Inclement Weather

If inclement weather prevents an applicant from being able to attend a scheduled audition, the School of Music Admissions Office will make every attempt to reschedule the applicant for another time. However, we are unable to guarantee that an audition space will be available. If it is not, the applicant may audition by self-prepared recording. Boston auditions follow the recommendation of the Boston University closings hotline at: 617-353-SNOW.
