Audition Repertory for Tenor Trombone and Bass Trombone

All applicants for admission to the undergraduate Trombone Program should be prepared to perform two original solo works. Each applicant should be prepared to perform 3 orchestral excerpts. Auditions are to be performed without accompaniment. Choose repertoire, within these guidelines, that you play the best.

Below are examples of literature appropriate for an audition. It is recommended that an applicant select works that demonstrate both:

Tongued Technical style (fast tempo, variety and correctness of rhythm, correct phrasing, clean articulations, correct style, phrasing all with musical line.)

Legato, Espressivo style (slow or moderate tempo, sustained correct phrasing, correct rhythm, melodic lines, correct style, all with musical line).

Solos should be selected from works at least as difficult as:

Tenor Trombone: Morceau Symphonique by Guilmant, Concertino by David or Cavatine by Saint-Saens.

Bass Trombone: Cameos, by Jacob, Concerto for Bass Trombone, Lebedev or Ballade by Ewazen.

MusM

All brass applicants must be prepared to perform three compositions, one from the Baroque or Classical periods, one from the Romantic period, and one from the Contemporary period. The candidate may also offer orchestral excerpts suitable to his or her own instrument.

MusAD

All brass applicants should prepare material equivalent to a master's level recital program.
