The Boston University Symphonic Chorus is open to all musicians in the campus community: undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, and friends. BU community members sing alongside music performance majors from the School of Music, collectively forming the premiere choral ensemble at Boston University. Each performance typically features a large choral work, often including orchestra and vocal soloists. The ensemble presents one concert each semester, including an annual performance at Symphony Hall, the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Rehearsals are held in the CFA Concert Hall at 855 Commonwealth Avenue on Wednesday evenings at 7pm; extra rehearsals are often held as performances approach and will be announced before the start of the semester. Placement hearings are generally held at the first and second rehearsals of each semester. Participating BU students should register for the course, which is offered for either one or zero credits.
For the 2017-2018 academic year, the chorus is led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Felipe, Director of Choral Activities, ad interim, and visiting Associate Professor of Music at Boston University. He also holds the appointment of Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawai’i.
BU Singers & Treble Singers
BU Singers and BU Treble Singers form the core of the BU undergraduate voice majors’ ensemble experience. In these groups students are expected to utilize the skills learned in their applied studios, knowledge of harmony and form, contextual sense from history, and their own personal musicality. At the same time, they will develop skills of listening, communication, sensitivity, compromise, and mutual support. Through several years of participation, students will experience an overview of choral repertoire and the ability to perform in a wide variety of styles. They will also improve their sight-reading skills and learn to work both as leaders and collaborators in a choral setting. Each ensemble is led by either the Director of Choral Activities or a graduate student in BU’s esteemed choral conducting program. Both ensembles typically give two performances each semester, most often in the CFA Concert Hall or Marsh Chapel. Students from other majors who have advanced choral singing experience may audition; please contact the Manager of Ensembles before semester start for more information. BU Singers and Treble Singers meet MF, 12:20pm-2:05pm.
