Business English for Professionals (EN 008)
Business English for Professionals is designed to help you develop the language proficiency and cultural background knowledge necessary to succeed in a professional business environment in English. This program has four major components:
Language and Communication Skills
This program will help you develop the English language and communication skills that are essential to success in your profession. This is a practical, hands-on course: you will improve your skills by conducting simulated business meetings, giving presentations, negotiating deals and drafting relevant documents. You will learn the appropriate English for social interactions as well as the more formal language of business. Your confidence will grow as you become increasingly competent at expressing yourself in clear and accurate English, both orally and through your writing.
Business Concepts
Working from materials such as case studies, textbooks, the Internet, radio broadcasts, and articles from business publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, you will learn the business concepts, current issues, and vocabulary of the corporate world. You will apply these concepts to your own professional world by developing a practice business plan. Class activities will help you develop the communication skills you need to succeed in the daily practice of business—participating in meetings, giving presentations, negotiating, and more.
Tours and Visiting Lecturers
A core component of this program is access to business professionals and real-world business exposure. In addition to hosting guest lecturers, your class will also make site visits to local companies, government offices and other places of interest. These visits may include: the Boston Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank, and local companies such as Prudential Financial, Verizon Telecommunications, and Bank of America (formerly FleetBoston).
Workshops
Improve your writing skills through our business communication workshops, which take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for an hour and a half per day. These workshops will focus on the written side of business. You will draft documents, memorandum, meetings summaries, and correspondence relevant to the business concepts that are discussed during the core instruction in the mornings.
Entrance Requirements
This program is open to individuals with an advanced level of English, plus at least two years academic or professional experience in the area of business. In addition to the usual application materials, please also send a copy of your CV or resume and a brief statement of purpose (300 to 500 words) describing your professional experience and what you hope to get out of this course.
