PROGRAM GOALS

  • To orient students to the US academic system
  • To refine the students’ fluency and accuracy in English
  • To prepare them for their field of study
  • To promote understanding of US social values and cross cultural communication
  • To prepare for life in the U.S.

 

Curriculum Details

English for Academic Purposes Class

English for Academic Purposes will help participants refine their English skills, increasing their accuracy, fluency and confidence needed to communicate effectively in English. Participants will improve overall abilities in both spoken and written English, as well as their understanding of US academic culture and general society. After completing this training program, participants will be better prepared to use English in their graduate studies and life in the US, in both formal and informal settings.

Skill development in this class this will include

  • Participating in academic seminars and discussions
  • Working in groups/collaboration
  • Understanding academic lectures
  • Taking notes from readings and lectures
  • Developing research skills
  • Writing academic English
  • Reading academic texts
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Academic vocabulary with a focus on their field of study
  • Research skills
  • Writing research papers and conventions of documentation based on their field of study
  • Online communication skills: email, academic discussion boards, listserves, online course platforms
  • Academic computer skills with a focus on those related to their field of study

  • Orientation to BU with Campus Tour
  • Students’ Rights as Non-US Citizens regarding visa statues, law enforcement, and arrest and detention from a representative of the BU ISSO
