How do I know my level of English?

There are eight levels of instruction at CELOP from Beginner through High Advanced. Your placement test at CELOP will tell us your actual level and will ultimately determine your acceptance into a particular concentration. However, the following description of the High-Intermediate level should help you select an appropriate concentration when you apply.

You are probably at the High-Intermediate level if . . .

You understand spoken sentences and some conversations on a variety of subjects—including abstract topics—but may not always understand the main ideas and/or details. You can have conversations on a variety of topics and can express your basic needs and feelings in normal social situations. You understand most written texts on general topics while reading at a steady pace. You can write paragraphs with simple organization and development with some errors in grammar and sentence structure.

If you do not think that your English skills have reached the level described above, you should select the English Language and Culture concentration, which can accomodate students of all levels.

Please note that sometimes students from two levels may be combined in the same class.
