FAQs
Academic Programs information for Summer students
How many students will be in my class?
Classes at CELOP have at most 12 -
16 students.
What
are “core” classes?
All regular full-time CELOP students are assigned to a core
class. Core classes:
- provide English language instruction in all four language
skills:
- speaking,
- listening,
- reading, and
- writing;
- meet every day:
- Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:55, and
- Tuesday and
Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.
What
is a “concentration”?
A concentration is the special focus of a core class. It indicates the type of English that
the students in that core class want or need to learn. Each core class has one of the
following “concentrations”:
- English Language
and Culture,
- English for
Academic Purposes, or
- International
Business English (offered only in the 12-week EN 055 program (May 18 –
August 14). These three core concentrations are described in detail in a
separate handout, which you will receive upon arrival at CELOP.

What are “elective classes”?
How many levels are there at CELOP?
CELOP students are placed,
according to their English language proficiency, into eight levels, from
beginning (level A) to advanced (level E). Level C is divided into low, middle, and high sections;
level D is divided into low and high sections:
Some classes have students of more
than one level. For example, a
class may be level “A/B” because the students in that class have English
language proficiencies that place them in either level A or level B.
How does CELOP place students?
All students undergo placement
testing over two days during the week before classes begin. Based on the results of the first day’s
placement test, on the second day students are placed in a testing group with
other students with similar scores. Students work with other students on reading, speaking, and listening
activities in a classroom setting. Instructors rate students’ performance in that setting. Also on the second day of testing,
students confirm their choice of core
concentration. All of that
information is used to place students in the correct core class. Students
are placed in an elective class based on each student’s own choice. Elective choices may be limited by a
student’s proficiency level.
