Orientation | BU Housing | Rules for Students

prepared by the Office of Residence Life

Welcome to CELOP and to your new student residence at Boston University. We hope your stay in B.U. Housing will be a positive part of your experience here in Boston. In order to avoid misunderstanding and serious consequences later on, we would like to emphasize some of the most important rules that an on-campus student should know. Students who break these rules can and will be punished. People who are found guilty of breaking these rules face punishments that may include dismissal from the housing unit as well as criminal charges.

  • Students cannot use, sell or have in their possession any illegal drugs.
  • Students under 21 cannot drink or have in their possession any alcoholic beverages.
  • Students 21 or over cannot drink in public places.
  • Student 21 or over cannot serve or sell alcohol to students under 21.
  • Students must never pull the fire alarm unless there is a real fire.
  • Students must never throw objects out of the windows.
  • Students must not physically or verbally attack another student.
  • Students must not use the telephone or e-mail to harass or threaten other students or B.U. employees.

There are other rules that B.U. staff must strictly enforce. However, in these cases, a student might get a second chance. If you are not clear about the meaning of these rules, ask your R.A. or a CELOP staff member.

  • Students must not cause noise that disturbs people outside their housing unit.
  • Students who wish to have an overnight guest must get permission from their roommates as well as from the hall or area office.
  • Students may not use certain Halogen lamps or food appliances in their housing units. (Exceptions: popcorn poppers and small refrigerators. See your RA for more details.)
  • Students who are here on an F-1 visa must remain a full-time student and avoid excessive absences.

It is important for you to know the rules of a new environment so that you can have a positive intercultural experience. We wish you every success and would like you to know that we are here to help you in your academic and personal development.
