FAQs | Internet and Networking
These questions deal with using the Internet and CELOP's internal network in the Multimedia Language Lab. Please also read the other MLL FAQs, Lab Policies and Lab Use.
Can I bring in my laptop and connect it to CELOP's network and the Internet?
Yes. Both the CELOP and LCC buildings have WiFi. There are also limited wired Ethernet connections in classrooms and lobby areas. See the Computing Orientation PDF for details.
How do I set up my laptop to connect to BU's network?
Unless you have used your laptop on a corporate network, it probably has all of the settings it needs to work on BU's network. However, if your laptop runs Windows, you must have all of the recent security updates installed, as well as anti-virus software. Boston University requires that you first register your computer by going to netreg.bu.edu. For more information, please see the Personal Computing Support Center's International Student Guide.
Should I sign up for a BU e-mail account (or "login account")?
Yes, absolutely. All BU students must have a BU login account. You will probably not use it for your e-mail, but you do need it to access computers and your information. During registration week, you will attend a BU Login Account workshop.
My friend e-mailed me a file that ends in .exe or .scr, but it won't open on the Macs.
.exe files are DOS and Windows executable files. This means that they are program files designed only to work on PCs running Microsoft Windows, or older PCs running DOS. .scr files are Windows screen savers. These can only be used on Windows PCs, and must be specially installed.
Can I view web sites and create documents in my native language?
Yes. All of the computers at CELOP, both Mac and PC, can access web pages in any language.

Be sure to read the orientation material about using CELOP computers and your own computer at CELOP and B.U.
