CELOP’s legal English programs offer something for everyone. Our courses are designed for both future LL.M. students and current legal practitioners. Courses focus on giving you the knowledge and skills you need to be successful in an English-speaking legal environment, with specific focus on legal vocabulary, oral and written argumentation, public speaking, and the American legal system.
Legal English programs are only offered during our summer semester.
Legal English for LLM Students
Legal English for LLM Students – 6 weeks (EN026)
This is an intensive English program developed in collaboration with the Boston University School of Law. This program, which is reserved for students who have been admitted into an LLM program at a US law school for the coming fall, will help you develop the language skills, legal knowledge and confidence necessary to be successful in an American law school. Students in this program may also enroll in an optional 3-week Pre-Course, for a total of 9 weeks of study.
Language Focus Learn the English language skills that are essential to the effective use of written and spoken legal English including legal vocabulary, oral and written argumentation, and public speaking.
Legal Study Gain an understanding of the US legal system by investigating the governmental, economic, historical, and sociological environment in which it functions.
Courthouse Visits Tour State and Federal Courthouses and observe a civil trial.
3-Week Pre-Course + Legal English for LLM Students – 9 weeks (EN016)
Speaking and Listening for Legal English Students Develop the speaking and listening skills you need to be an active participant in the Legal English for LLM Students program, and be better prepared for your LLM program in September. The curriculum uses a variety of content to introduce you to American culture as a foundation for understanding American law.
Legal English for Practitioners
Legal English for Practitioners is open to practicing lawyers. Studying alongside colleagues in the legal profession, this program will help you develop the language proficiency and cultural background knowledge necessary to succeed in a professional legal environment in English. Specifically, in this program we will help you to:
- Develop a conversant vocabulary of legal terms
- Understand the basic organization of the American legal system
- Present clear, logical, and well-supported legal reasoning in oral communication and written form
- Improve communicative competence through giving oral presentations, listening to lectures, and participating in discussions
Co-taught by a professional English language teacher and a practicing attorney, this program has four major components:
Legal Sessions Receive legal instruction from a practicing attorney, Monday through Thursday mornings for two hours per day. These sessions will feature an overview of American law and practice, including the law of commerce.
Language Sessions Learn the English language skills that are essential to the effective use of written and spoken legal English.
Tours and visiting lecturers Tour a Federal Courthouse and observe court procedings, visit the Boston University School of Law Library, and listen to guest lecturers such as a law professor from the University’s LLM program.
Workshops Improve your lawyering skills through our legal workshops, which take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for an hour and a half per day. These workshops will be co-taught by the class attorney and your CELOP English language instructor. They will focus on negotiating and drafting a contract and engaging in a mock trial.
Legal English Certificate Program
The Legal English Certificate Program (or ‘LECP’) has been jointly developed by Boston University School of Law and CELOP.
