Rafael UlloaRafael Ulloa

Rafael Ulloa, originally from Ecuador, began studying at CELOP in May 2000.  He is currently the junior editor of El Planeta newspaper.

Ulloa had spent six years in the advertising field in Ecuador when he decided to take a break and learn more about the world, while at the same time improving his English.  One of his friends recommended he study at CELOP.

He says, “While studying at CELOP, I improved my knowledge of English grammar and writing.  I also had the opportunity to give oral presentations and practice speaking English in public.  While at CELOP, I learned a lot about the city of Boston—what to do, what not to do, how to get to all different parts of the city.  The skills I learned in my first three weeks studying at CELOP will still be useful to me if I decide to stay here in Boston for ten years.   CELOP is a very special place for me.  It is the first place I came to after leaving my country for the first time.  It is like my second home.”

Read about CELOP in an El Planeta issue (PDF, en español).

Ulloa continues, “During my time at CELOP, special people entered into my life that I would not be able to meet otherwise.  I met people of diverse ages, careers and interests—bankers and doctors studied side-by-side with undergraduate students, but everyone was treated equally.  We were all in the same situation; we wanted to learn English.  CELOP is a great place to come to when you are just arriving from a foreign country; at CELOP you learn good ways to start your new life in the States.”

He concludes, “While at CELOP, I learned how to make a place for myself here in Boston.  I was able to adapt to the American culture and environment.  CELOP provided me with a range of different academic and social connections; it’s a place where I can always return to and continue to meet new friends.”
