Job Duties

The Lab Assistant has very broad responsibilities and may take on wide ranging projects and tasks as experience and skills develop over time. In general, the LA assists the Coordinator in the running of the labs, with general CELOP computer maintenance, with developing curricular, training, and Web projects, and with assisting faculty and staff.

Specific duties may include:
  • monitoring “Drop-in Labs,” when students use the labs on their own, usually for word processing, audio or video files, E-mail, Web browsing, ESL software
  • assisting in maintaining lab, staff, and faculty computers by running disk utilities
  • installing software and upgrades
  • assisting and training faculty to scan text and photos
  • assisting faculty and students with applications
  • assisting with curricular, training, or Web projects
  • researching solutions to technical problems
  • digitizing and compressing audio and video
  • authoring simple multimedia programs with prepared content
  • maintaining certain technical and information databases (FileMaker)

Education

  • MA in Teaching ESL, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, 1998
  • BA in Spanish and International Studies with a minor in Japan Studies, Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1989

Experience Abroad

  • Two years total of study and teaching in Tokyo, Akita, and Hamamatsu, Japan.
  • Six months total of study and teaching in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Languages Spoken Read, or Understood

  • Spanish - 15 years of study, 6 years teaching at University of Minnesota
  • Portuguese - 2 years of intensive study of language and literature
  • Japanese - 2 years of study in college
  • Latin - 2 years of study in secondary school
