Dr. Alecia Jioeva
Visiting Fulbright Scholar
Dr. Jioeva is an accomplished research scholar from the Department of International Politics at Moscow State University. As a Political Scientist, Alecia is particularly drawn to the use of language in political campaigns, and is focusing on political rhetoric found in English-speaking countries, primarily the United States and the United Kingdom.
Alecia is creating a new class for Moscow State University called “Political Speech Making”, and is also writing a textbook for her course, “Insights into Politics and the Language of Politics”. She has come to the United States for the abundance of source materials on political rhetoric, and has made good use of resources found at Boston University, Harvard, the Boston Public Library, and the John F. Kennedy Library.
Dr. Jioeva explains that she could have had her Fulbright experience in New York City, but has wanted to come to Boston since she saw pictures of the city years ago.
“I love the atmosphere of the city, I love everything that is in the air, the intellectual atmosphere, with so many students. I love working with students.”
While at CELOP, Alecia has been both a student and an instructor, attending classes to experience teaching methods used in the United States, and delivering lectures to her CELOP colleagues about English instruction in Moscow. Dr. Jioeva has also given lectures, most recently at Harvard University, on the topic of her home region of Ossetia.
(Alecia was also profiled by students in the Fall 2007 CELOP Semester Book.)
