Rubrics Cubed: Making Learning Outcomes Transparent for Teachers and Students

  • Starts: 12:00 pm on Tuesday, March 18, 2014
  • Ends: 1:15 pm on Tuesday, March 18, 2014
This is a teaching and tech talk combined: Co-presenters Dr. Deborah Breen (CAS Writing Program) and Kacie Cleary (Educational Technology) will take you through three important aspects of understanding and developing assessment rubrics for your class. First, we’ll discuss where rubrics fit as an assessment tool in our current approach to transparency in teaching: that is, how do they benefit teachers and how do we choose the best rubric among the different forms available? Second, we’ll consider how rubrics fit in our framework of learning-centered education: that is, how do they benefit students before, during, and after their assessment task? (It’s not all rah rah rubrics! We’ll also talk about some of the criticisms of these assessment tools.) And finally, how does Blackboard support the development of specific rubric types through its design tools? We’ll have plenty of examples to show, so please join us for this pedagogy and practice talk.
