Introduction
Thank-you for the opportunity to comment on the National Science Foundation's report, "Complex Environmental Systems: Synthesis for Earth, Life, and Society in the 21st Century", written by the NSF Advisory Committee for Environmental Research and Education (AC-ERE) (http://www.nsf.gov/geo/ere/ereweb/advisory.cfm). On behalf of many colleagues at Boston University and other institutions I commend the Committee and the NSF for articulation of the ascendancy of environmental research in a clear and forceful way. The report reflects the growing recognition that many of the pressing scientific questions of the day derive from human use of natural resources and transformation of the earth's ecosystems. Implementation of this bold vision for future research and education will require significant resources and sweeping changes in the way the NSF views and administers environmental research. What follows are a few suggestions to improve an already excellent report.
