Netscape Communicator

The primary Internet browser available on ACS is Netscape Communicator 4.79. Netscape Communicator includes several components:

  • Navigator--browse the Web
  • Messenger--send and receive e-mail; read and post news
  • Composer--create your own Web pages
To access Netscape on ACS, type:
  netscape &

at the ACS command line.

A default Netscape Navigator browser window will open on your screen. To access the various Communicator components, use the Communicator pull-down menu, located near the top of the window.

This version of Netscape must be run on a graphics-capable terminal such as one of the X-terminals located in the public terminal cluster in Mugar Library.

Other Web Browsers
If you use a PC or Mac, we recommend you run a web brownser locally on that PC or Mac. This will usually give you the best browser speed and performance.

If you did want to use the ACS version of Netscape from a PC or Mac, you'd need to use an X emulation program such as X-Win32 for Windows or X11 for Mac OS X.

An alternative is to run lynx, an ASCII/text-only Web browser also available on ACS.
