Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

Dual Degree Programs

Application Instructions

JD/MA Programs

Available programs in English, History, International Relations, Philosophy, or Preservation Studies

  • Prospective students are required to submit only one application to the Law School.  These materials will later be reviewed by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences when applicable.  Admission into the JD/MA program requires application reviews and decisions by both the Law School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Only those applicants who are admitted to the JD program will be reviewed for the JD/MA program.  If you are not admitted to the JD program but still wish to be considered for a Master of Arts, you will need to submit a separate application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • If you receive notification of admittance into the JD program, you will receive an additional email from the Law School within 2-4 weeks after the admission that will contain instructions on how to proceed further if you still intend to pursue the MA portion of the dual program with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Please be mindful of the Graduate School deadlines for each of the available disciplines. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early in order to meet the deadlines of both schools.

MBA/MA Programs

Available programs in Economics or International Relations

  • Prospective students are required to submit only one application to the Graduate School of Management.  These materials will later be reviewed by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences when applicable.  Admission into the MBA/MA program requires application reviews and decisions by both the Graduate School of Management and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Only those applicants who are admitted to the MBA program will be reviewed for the MBA/MA program.  If you are not admitted to the MBA program but still wish to be considered for a Master of Arts, you will need to submit a separate application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • If you receive admission into the MBA program and you have chosen the MBA/MA program on the submitted application form, your complete application will be forwarded to the GRS Admissions Office.  Prospective students are encouraged to apply early in order to meet the deadlines of both schools.  Please be mindful of the Graduate School deadlines for each of the available disciplines.
