Reconsideration
The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences does not defer admission. However, if you are offered admission but wish to start at a later date, you may ask to be reconsidered for a future semester. Applications can be deferred for up to one year beyond your initial semester of admission. Your original application will then be reviewed with the new applicant pool, taking into account competition from other applicants and relevant work you have conducted in the interim. Keep in mind that the department is not obligated to re-offer you admission.
Your original application credentials are kept on file for one year so you need not resubmit them, unless you would like to provide updates. If you wish to submit updated materials such as a personal statement or resume, please email these documents to grs@bu.edu at the beginning of the admissions cycle (early September). Documents can also be sent to our mailing address as listed below. You will not need to pay another application fee.
International applicants must submit an updated International Student Data Form with the required documentation by the new application deadline. Updated financial documentation required by the International Students and Scholars Office will also need to be submitted by the deadline.
Requests for reconsideration can be made by submitting the Reconsideration Request Form or in writing to:
