CAS News: September 15 2010

Fresh Faces

Despite the extremely hot weather students were out in droves for the school opening events that took place in the days leading up to the first day of class on September 2nd. On Tuesday, August 31st the students were welcomed back to campus with the first ever Comm. Ave Fair. Each School/College was represented along Commonwealth Avenue offering free food and gifts and introducing students to the many opportunities afforded to them at Boston University. The College of Arts & Sciences enticed students with slushy drinks, fruit kabobs, and free flash drives to file the many papers and projects they will be creating throughout the semester. On Wednesday, September 1st the College of Arts & Sciences was once again represented on Marsh Plaza welcoming the Class of 2014 with a giant ice cream social. Deans, faculty, and staff from the College were invited to scoop ice cream and mingle with the new students while being entertained by Fish Worship, a blues band made up of Boston University faculty members. With classes underway, the first-year students were welcomed to the first CAS Café to discuss the summer reading opportunity Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert. The Café provided an intimate setting for a small number of first-years to discuss the reading with faculty, deans, and peers while enjoying a light afternoon snack. The Café host on Tuesday, September 7th was the first of two Cafés for first year students to acquaint themselves with faculty and peers.
