Welcoming a New Director of Language Instruction
Welcome back to what promises to be a great academic year!
Professor Gisela Hoecherl-Alden will join us on September 1 as Assistant Dean and Director of Language Instruction with responsibility for leading, coordinating, and inspiring excellence in language instruction in the College of Arts & Sciences and beyond. Current on the faculty of the University of Maine at Orono, she will join the faculty of the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature as her own teaching and research focuses on German Studies. This position reports through the CAS Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education.
This is not just a leadership position for us at Boston University; we are pioneering in our creation of this position. She will focus on pedagogy and curriculum improvement; professional development, especially among the crucial corps of lecturers; integration of curricular and other planning across languages and departments; fundraising to support our language initiatives; forming a CAS international council to help us coordinate across our diverse language, area, and international programs; and participating as a key player in our involvement in initiatives supporting our further development as a global university.
Global and international studies are central to our mission, and excellence in language and culture studies must be core to that mission. We are looking forward to her leadership here. Please share this news with interested colleagues.
