A New Chair for Math Department

Tasso Kaper will serve as the new chair of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics beginning in Fall 2011. He will succeed Ralph D'Agostino, who has led the department to great success in recent years. Kaper earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory and at Brown University. Since 1992, he has been on the faculty at Boston University.

Kaper is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He has been the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Early CAREER Award. His research centers on dynamical systems, multi-scale systems, pattern formation theory, partial differential equations, model reduction theory, and on applications in biology, chemistry, fluid mechanics, and mechanical engineering. Presently, he is also Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems.
