DOE Upward Bound Math Science Grant for
Goldberg and BU
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded
Boston University a five-year, $1.25 million
Upward Bound Math Science grant to help
low-income and first-generation college-bound
students prepare to succeed in college-level
math and science.
The Upward Bound Math Science program will
be led by co-principal investigators Bennett
Goldberg, chair of the Physics
Department, and Ruth Shane, Director of
the Boston University/Boston Public Schools
Collaborative Office in the School of Education.
It will serve 50 high school students recruited
from Brighton High School, Charlestown High
School, and Chelsea High School. An expansion
of BU’s “classic” Upward
Bound program, which focuses on general
preparation for college, the new program
will aim to develop students’ potential
to excel in math and science and encourage
them to pursue college degrees in those
subjects.
The selected students will engage in hands-on
and exploratory science activities, do work
in research labs, and learn about careers
in science, all of which represents a new
level of integration with academic researchers
at BU. The program will include after-school
tutoring, test preparation, college counseling,
and Science Saturdays during the academic
year, as well as an intensive six-week academic
summer residential program during the summer.
All services will be based on BU’s
campus. press
