A special screening and discussion of famed Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov's newest film, in honor of World War II Victory Day (celebrated in Commonwealth Countries May 7th, Most of Europe May 8th and Russia May 9th). Trained as a historian before becoming a filmmaker, Sokurov himself narrates Francofonia, occasionally delving into European history more broadly and ruminating on the course of Europe today.
Francofonia is a rich meditation on the Louvre Museum in Paris and the preservation of European culture during the destructive climate of World War Two. The film will be followed by discussion and Q&A with Anna Winestein, Executive Director of Ballets Russes Arts Initiative and Harlow Robinson, Matthews Distinguished Professor of History at Northeastern University.
