In this talk, Bill Carroll, Professor of English, considers why Shakespeare’s biography is such a perennial question. After reviewing some of the known facts of his life, he takes up the views of those who have claimed that the Shakespeare of Stratford did not write the plays that bear his name.

Spoiler alert: he did write the plays, but the so-called anti-Stratfordians represent an interesting cultural phenomenon.
