This year, the newly inaugurated Pardee School for Global Studies has begun a new film series initiative: “Global Fridays: Promoting Cultural Understanding Through Film.” Inspired by journalist E. Nina Rothe's article “Six Films That Could Save the World” and spearheaded by the Center for the Study of Europe, the fall 2014 series - “Stories from Israel and Palestine” is a collaboration between the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations, Middle East and North African Studies, the Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies, and the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literatures. Screenings take place at 3 PM on Fridays throughout the semester. Click link below for full list of films.
On Friday, October 24, we are screening Palestinian film director Annemarie Jacir's Salt of This Sea. Soraya, born in Brooklyn in a working class community of Palestinian refugees, discovers that her grandfather's savings were frozen in a bank account in Jaffa when he was exiled in 1948. Direct, stubborn, and determined to reclaim what is hers, she fulfills her life-long dream of "returning" to Palestine. Visit the NPR Review for more information.
