How can we work together to promote better cultural understanding worldwide?

Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

Yasser El-Shimy is the former Egypt Analyst at the International Crisis Group and a former diplomat at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has published a chapter in Pacts and Alliances in History: Diplomatic Strategy and the Politics of Coalitions. He has also taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C on U.S. Foreign Policy in the Middle East. He holds a BA and MA degrees in Political Science from the American University in Cairo, and is currently an ABD at Boston University's Department of Political Science.
