Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

Dr. Debortri Dhar's research examines the relationship between rape, suicide, and the postcolonial state, exploring such themes as gender, caste and class; silence and subaltern speech; culture, rights, and the nation; women's agency; transnational feminism and egalitarian justice. Dhar is the 2013-2014 Visiting Scholar at Boston University's Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program. She holds a Masters in Women's Studies from Oxford University and a Ph. D. in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University.
