How can we work together to promote better cultural understanding worldwide?

Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. He recalls how the violence and tumult of civil war jolted his family, who, despite losing relatives, their home, and possessions, continued to nurture his wish to attend a university.

The Poetry of Engagement

Featured poets – Robert Pinsky, Jorie Graham, Sharon Olds, Rae Armantrout, and Frank Bidart – will be reading their poems from the recently published anthology, The New American Poetry of Engagement: A 21st Century Anthology, edited by Ann Keniston and Jeffrey Gray, which collects 21st century American works by both established and emerging poets that deal with the public events, government policies, ecological and political threats, economic uncertainties, and large-scale violence that have largely defined the century to date. This event is sponsored by the BU Center for the Humanities and CGS. A reception will follow.
