Chemistry/Neuroscience (double major)

Richard came to Boston University as a recipient of the University’s most prestigious scholarship, the Trustee Scholarship. Because of his work researching Alzheimer’s disease through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), Richard became the seventh student in Boston University history to receive a Rhodes Scholarship for his academic achievements and leadership potential. After graduation, he will enter Oxford University for two to three years of study in neuroscience.

Besides his work with UROP, Richard’s main extracurricular activity is with Boston University Stage Troupe, where he has taken charge of everything from lighting to stage management. He also participates in Chemia, the campus chemistry students’ organization, and works with the Community Service Center and the Dean’s Host Program.

Q: Tell me about the research project you have been working on through UROP.

A: For the last two years, I have worked with Christine Li, Associate Professor of Biology, on a neurogenetics project related to Alzheimer’s disease. At the end of my sophomore year I won a Beckman Scholar award, which funded this research and allowed me to present my findings at the Beckman Scholars Symposium at the Beckman Center for the National Academy of Sciences and Engineering in Los Angeles last summer.

Working closely with Associate Professor Li in the research lab has been very rewarding. She has been a good friend and research mentor, and has helped me to develop useful lab skills and trained me to think like a scientist, qualities that should serve me well in graduate school.

Q: What was the most important thing you have learned at the College of Arts and Sciences?

A: I have learned the true value of pursuing all of my academic and nonacademic interests while in college. There are so many opportunities that exist, but you must be willing to think big and take advantage of them. For me, the excellent instruction I have received and the support of the faculty and administration have been instrumental in making my successes possible.
