Q: Tell me about the research project
you have been working on through UROP.
A: For the last two years, I have worked with Christine Li, Associate
Professor of Biology, on a neurogenetics project related to Alzheimer’s
disease. At the end of my sophomore year I won a Beckman Scholar award,
which funded this research and allowed me to present my findings at
the Beckman Scholars Symposium at the Beckman Center for the National
Academy of Sciences and Engineering in Los Angeles last summer.
Working closely with Associate Professor Li in the research lab
has been very rewarding. She has been a good friend and research
mentor, and has helped me to develop useful lab skills and trained
me to think like a scientist, qualities that should serve me well
in graduate school.
Q: What was the most important thing you have learned at the College
of Arts and Sciences?
A: I have learned the true value of pursuing all of my academic
and nonacademic interests while in college. There are so many opportunities
that exist, but you must be willing to think big and take advantage
of them. For me, the excellent instruction I have received and the
support of the faculty and administration have been instrumental in
making my successes possible. To learn more about Richard and
