Intra-University Transfer (IUT)

Guidelines for students planning to transfer into CAS

A completed IUT application with all necessary credentials must be on file in CAS Student Records (Room B3) by the following deadlines:

August 1 to register in CAS for Semester I

December 1 to register in CAS for Semester II

No applications will be reviewed between April 15 and June 15.

Students considering a transfer to CAS are required to schedule an appointment with an Academic Counselor in the CAS Academic Advising Center, CAS Room105. Bring an unofficial copy of your transcript to this meeting. Transcripts can be obtained at the Office of the University Registrar, 881 Commonwealth Ave.

Students admitted to CAS with a concentration must work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies of their department to choose a faculty advisor. Students admitted to CAS as undeclared students (no concentration) must work with the staff of the Academic Advising Center (CAS 105) to select a faculty advisor.

Effective for the Fall 1999 semester, admission to the College of Arts and Sciences requires the following: a minimum 2.3 cumulative grade point average, good academic standing at your current school, and at least one full-time semester with twelve or more credits in a degree program at your current school. A grade point average of 2.0 in all academic coursework is required for graduation, as well as a minimum of 128 academic credits. Students will not be allowed to transfer during their senior year.

The Residence Requirement states: During the junior and senior years, a candidate for the B.A. degree is required to enroll in at least twelve courses while registered as a full-time student in the College of Arts and Sciences. The candidate must also be enrolled as a full-time student for the two consecutive semesters preceding graduation, including BU study abroad programs. Neither BU Summer Term nor exclusive enrollment in Metropolitan College will satisfy the residence requirement.

Procedures to apply for an Intra-University Transfer into CAS:

  • Meet with a CAS Academic Counselor in the Academic Advising Center, CAS Room 105.
  • Submit a copy of the Photocopy Request to the IUT coordinator in your present school. Copies of your high school transcript, CEEB scores, and any external college transcripts will be forwarded by your current school to CAS Student Records, Room B3. Allow a minimum of five working days to process your request.
  • Submit an up-to-date, unofficial BU transcript, together with the completed Program Change form (the IUT application) to CAS Student Records, CAS Room B3. You should obtain the unofficial transcript from the Office of the University Registrar, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd Floor. In addition, you will be required to submit a copy of the Intra-University Transfer checklist completed during your appointment with a CAS Academic Counselor.
  • The Program Change form must be complete. The proposed codes are: College – CAS; Degree Program – 21; Field of Study – see attached list of major codes; Current Program – check in your current school.
  • Students previously enrolled in degree programs within the University who are now in MET non-degree programs print MET 00-000 on line 11. On line 12 print the program codes for your previous college and have your previous college forward your records. All other MET non-degree students must apply through the Office of Admissions.
  • Students entering as juniors must declare a concentration. Freshmen and sophomores may postpone this decision until pre-registration prior to their junior year.
  • First semester freshmen or transfers who do not have BU transcripts will have their applications reviewed after CAS Room B3, Student Records obtains their grades. Grades will be sent to CAS Student Records automatically; you do not need to request them. Decisions will be posted outside CAS Room B3 bi-weekly. If after two weeks your status remains "Pending-1," check with your current school about your photocopy of records request.
  • When a decision is made, an evaluation of what academic credits have been accepted toward your CAS degree and what requirements are lacking will be mailed to you and to your department of concentration. Retain this evaluation; you will need it when filing your graduation application.
  • Any liberal arts courses will ordinarily transfer to CAS. Courses outside of the liberal arts – for example, professional courses in engineering, business, or education – normally transfer as elective credit only. No transfer credit will be granted for Physical Education(PDP) or Military Science(ROTC) courses.
