Qais Akbar Omar (GRS’16), a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, has published a much-praised memoir, A Fort of Nine Towers: An Afghan Family Story. Training Foreign Area Officers in South Asian Studies

The U.S. Army Training Command has certified the BU Department of International Relations to train Foreign Area Officers (FAOs) focusing on South Asia. BU is now one of a select group of colleges and universities certified to conduct training in all areas covered by its Foreign Area Officer education program. This designation reflects the breadth and depth of BU’s offerings in area studies.

FAOs are military diplomats; among other responsibilities, they serve as defense attachés at U.S. embassies around the world. FAOs are selected from among superior performing mid-career officers on a competitive basis. Upon selection, they receive intensive language training and advanced graduate-level education in a specific region of the world. BU has educated dozens of such officers in the past.
